Hello potential future Oatly employee. We are looking for a Director of Nutrition for Oatly North America. Nutrition is deep within the Oatly story - the original Oatly oatmilk was developed in the early 90s by nutrition scientists at Lund University studying the global prevalence of lactose intolerance. Building on that origin story and decades of nutrition science and leadership from our team in Europe, this role will be responsible for cementing nutrition as an embedded, expert function in the Oatly North American organization.
This person will report into the VP Corporate Affairs and coordinate directly with the rest of the corporate affairs group – sustainability, public affairs, public relations, internal communications and community management – to articulate Oatly’s nutrition story both internally and externally. The Director of Nutrition will act as our nutrition expert and strategist for various in-house and brand needs, as well as for external engagement. They will also support North American product development throughout work on new and existing products and coordinate North American efforts with the global nutrition team.
Here are the things we want to hire you to do:
- In partnership with VP Corporate Affairs, develop and lead a brand new nutrition expert function from the ground up in North America that is embedded into everyday and long-term business strategy, provides nutrition leadership for the internal North American team and external audiences, connects Oatly North America with global Oatly nutrition team, and grows Oatly’s nutrition credibility in North America
- Partner directly with product development, global R&D and nutrition teams, and portfolio management to provide North American nutrition perspective and expertise in new and existing product development, so that products fit clearly within the context of healthy North American diets
- Provide intelligence and high-level research-based evidence in nutrition to inform decision making for several departments, with a main focus on regulatory and corporate affairs
- Help articulate a clear, ownable nutrition narrative for Oatly North America and its products with a clear point of view on Oatly’s role in North American diets, the strengths of its products, and the company’s commitment to science-based product development and nutrition thought leadership
- Partner with internal communications director to ensure internal Oatly teams are educated on and confident in the company’s nutrition narrative and vision, as well as the specific nutrition underpinnings of the North American product portfolio
- Develop and maintain a strong network of related nutrition experts across various industries (media, academia, medical/clinical, corporate) and demographics for the company to call on for expert consultation and partnership
- In partnership with public relations, public affairs and internal comms, develop a cohesive communications strategy for Oatly’s ongoing nutrition narrative, to be used with employees, media, consumers, customers, partners, policymakers and the general public
- Act as public spokesperson and Oatly nutrition expert with media, government, and other public audiences
- Monitor and respond to ever-evolving nutrition dialogue in North America
- Partner with public affairs to monitor and respond to nutrition policy and regulation, either alone or in partnership with peers, trade organizations, NGOs, and other public partners
- Identify opportunities to support ownable research in North America
Here are the things we think you need:
- Registered Dietitian credentials or a Master's in Science in Nutrition, Dietetics, or Public Health
- 8+ years of experience in nutrition, public health communications, or nutrition regulatory and corporate affairs
- 2+ years working for (or with) CPG food and beverage brands on nutrition strategy and leading nutrition communications
- Deep, demonstrated technical expertise in nutrition topics, including a strong perspective on plant-rich diets and the role of plant-based foods in meeting nutrition needs and combatting public health challenges like non-communicable diseases
- A connected network of nutrition expert peers across industries and communities, including general population, pediatric, geriatric, sports, and diverse backgrounds
- Intrinsic and authentic resonance with Oatly’s nutrition and sustainability values and demonstrated commitment to driving meaningful change in the food and beverage industry
- A love of good, delicious food and a passion for matching modern dietary patterns and trends with solid nutrition backing
- Strong personal POV to inform thought leadership on global and North American nutrition issues, such as planetary diets, ultraprocessed foods, national reduction strategies, nutrition equity, societal determinants of health, “food as medicine
- Comfort and experience working independently to lead complex projects with multiple stakeholders, working across cultures and functions, and managing for impact
- Demonstrated experience interpreting scientific and academic work, distilling key messages and projects for different audiences, and publishing or posting these messages through external media (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, professional blogs, posted media interviews, etc.)
- Experience working with NGOs, the public, media, government officials, and with people from different cultures and diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, including delivering public presentations
- Ability to travel 20% - 30%, including internationally

The salary for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to geographic location, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. Compensation may also include bonus, commission, or equity as applicable. Our good faith estimate for base salary is $145,000.
